After losing my father in February of 2012, I take full advantage of remembering him during things we done together. Some of the most memorable times were in the outdoors. I learned the “ins and outs” of hunting whitetail through his experience.
As the Missouri gun season approached, I made the decision to set down the Bear Bow and see if dad’s rifle could help me get my “fix”. Harvesting a mature buck with this gun would truly add to the experience. This increased my anticipation for the opener, along with, increasing rut activity on the Reconyx Cameras.
On November 16th, I requested assistance filming from my new cameraman, Adam McMain. A ground blind positioned in a wheat and turnip field was going to be my destination. The weather conditions were less than favorable; 40 mph wind gust were beating the sides off our blind. As evening approached, the wind calmed just enough to trigger some deer movement. I had a specific buck I was targeting, which Jason Bowers and I encountered just one week ago. The Reconyx was capturing him on a consistent basis as well.
I couldn’t help but think the ol’man had something to do with what happens next. That’s right, the one I was waiting for steps out and presents me with the angle I needed. As I squeezed the trigger, dad’s rifle sounded off across the turnips and found its mark. Needless to say, this experience added a whole new level to getting my “FIX” !!!
